Houses Built On Concrete Slabs
Still, many of the finest Indian brains in science, technology and medicine find the US an irresistible draw. The success story of the likes of Hargobind Khurana and Vinod Khosla is much trumpeted. Indian engineers, doctors and scientists throng the universities of the land. Obviously, Indian professionals work very hard. They suffer dislocation, isolation and numerous cultural challenges but they have the skills, the mindset and the work-ethic to succeed.
The untold story, however, is of the less skilled Indian immigrants, the third kind of immigrant. The recent brouhaha involving Devyani Khobragade, the Indian diplomat arrested in New York, forgets the story of her maid, Sangeeta Richard.
India is a deeply divided country where the elite matters. India does not care about its soldiers being beheaded , millions suffering malnutrition and a culture of rape. People like Sangeeta want to flee a country where if you are not a part of the lucky sperm club or achieve great success, daily life is an uphill struggle. Chronic unemployment plagues India. Even those who are ostensibly employed are often wiling away their time and earning a pittance. Apart from economic hardship, many individuals are deeply unhappy in a highly repressive society.
How the World Perceives the New American Dream
There is a great desire to escape and a large number of people are looking for opportunities. America with its glow of professional success, rags to riches stories and seductive movies, is the Promised Land just as it was in the past for Europeans who were escaping poverty and repression. Coming over to the US for poorer Indians is not easy. They do not get into universities to study physics or genetics. They put together all their savings to get to the US and then go missing.
They are undocumented and illegal immigrants who run the risk of being deported if they are caught. This fails to deter many intrepid souls. Dance troupes go underground when they are visiting the US. Many people come in on tourist visas and then never go back. Some even come to Mexico and jump the border.

Illegal Indian immigrants take up odd jobs in farms, restaurants or factories just like their Mexican counterparts. Of course, not all of the less skilled immigrants come to the US illegally. A large number of Indians have always applied for asylum. I know a poor lawyer who was so desperate to move to the US that he applied for asylum and now works in a prison. Another person I met at a sandwich shop in New York had come to the US on a school trip and made a similar claim. Regardless of whether the less skilled immigrants have used legal or illegal means to move to the US, they end up doing jobs that Americans shun.
Britain has a class system and is the most stratified society of the West. Oil-burning equipment 50 years ago, however, was not as refined as it is today.
The s: Pursuing The American Dream
Users were confronted with poor uniformity in the oil that was delivered to them. Lower-quality oil filters clogged easily, and clogging oil formed carbon at fuel nozzles and spark gaps. Inexpensive, prefabricated chimneys composed of metal or incombustible material were designed especially for gas and oil furnaces. The chimneys were designed to be resistant to corrosive flue gases and condensate, and could be easily assembled in the field. However, some chimneys had flue temperature limits, and if they were overheated, they rapidly deteriorated.

It was later found that burning natural gas creates a high hydrogen content, causing heavy moisture condensation. This, in turn, eventually causes the chimney to crumble.
Rethinking the American Dream
As a remedy, metal liners were installed in the chimneys. Alernative Power As heating costs started going up in the s, scientists began looking for alternative, inexpensive energy sources to heat homes. This led to the development of technologies such as solar, geothermal, and Trombe walls, which were based on the concept of solar power. Based on transistor technology of the s, Bell Laboratories in the United States created the first photovoltaic PV cells in , with the invention of the silicon solar cell.
In the beginning of the s, PV cells were used primarily in the space industry to power U.
They are still the main energy source for manned and unmanned space launches today. The disadvantages of using solar energy include a high initial installation cost, lack of sun during the day in colder climates to collect enough energy, and the supplemental heating required is usually electric, which is more expensive. The first geothermal energy source established for power production was drilled in in an area called The Geysers, north of San Francisco.
Deeper wells were drilled later in the s to tap into additional sources of energy.
ajihabuvap.tk Geothermal energy is clean, considered safe, reliable, is a renewable energy resource, and can heat water and air. Report Abusive Comment Thank you for helping us to improve our forums. November 6, The decade following World War II is often described as one of the most prosperous economic times in American history. With victory under their belts and money in their pockets, Americans in the s could optimistically pursue the American dream. Spence Engineering Co. EnMet Corp. Report Abusive Comment.
With hindsight these cuts seem unwise because, contrary to certain predictions made in the s, the whole world did not rush to embrace the American dream. Today, almost all of these regimes are increasingly corrupt and repressive.
The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
But at the turn of the 21st century, the new authoritarian model was looking pretty good. These military efforts were accompanied by numerous studies calling for a new public diplomacy fitted to the challenges of the new century. But these calls have not been satisfactorily answered.
So far, the U. This in a world flooded with sophisticated Chinese, Russian, and violent jihadist propaganda, where it is more important than ever to reaffirm all three strands of the American dream. Here we encounter a challenge rarely acknowledged in the debate over public diplomacy.
